Insulin administration has greatly changed over the last decades and continues to do so today. Diabetes has been recognized as a serious medical condition. People did not know the cause of it at the time; now we know it is caused by a malfunction in the pancreas which does not produce enough insulin. Experiments were conducted on dogs in the 1920s, which showed that removing the pancreas made dogs diabetic. The first insulin injection occurred in 1922 to a a diabetic named Leonard Thompson. Insulin then became one of the first proteins to be crystallized in pure form in 1926. Approximately 3 decades later in 1955, insulin was the first protein to be fully sequenced. Diabetes is an increasing medical condition in which more are being affected by these days meaning augmented numbers of insulin administrators is increasing. Insulin administration was and still is an important field of research.
